I am so excited to post my first start to finish project, not just a “work in progress.” I have wanted to update my spice rack for some time. And when I say spice rack I mean jumble of random spice jars that live in a cabinet that was too high for me to reach or see what I have.
I had to stand on my tippy-toes and hold the phone over my head to get this picture.
Dysfunctional Spice and other kitchen food items
First things first, as I was packing up I threw away old spices or anything that I had either never used or hadn’t used in a very long time. So that was about half of the items in here.
And I ended up with this:
I had about 30 various jars; some blends some individual spices. And apparently I have a LOVE of Cayenne Pepper because I had THREE jars of it!!!!
Then I did a little research and found this site (Custom Magnetic Spice Rack). And promptly ordered a set of 24 – 6 oz containers. I started with 4oz but upon further review of the website I read that I actually needed the 6 oz not 4oz because they were by volume instead of weight… yadda yadda yadda I got them in the mail a few days later!

Now whenever I have seen these online people have had pretty labels on them. In the interest of “get it done already” I went with what materials I had on hand. That would be my trusty label maker. When I bought this thing a 5 years ago I never understood why it came with silver label tape. Well now I do! It blends perfectly! I came up with what I think is a pretty ingenious idea of putting a label not only on the front but also on the top of the container. That way if the lid gets separated from the jar they can be matched!
It took a LONG time, and was pretty tedious to affix the labels but I’m soooooo happy now that they’re done!

Not sure if its evident from the color variations of photos, but I started way early in the morning and finished after the sun went down. OY!
Here is why I love this solution and am SO excited to bring it back to the other house.
- It frees up my cabinet for food items that I normally keep in my basement pantry and I inevitably forget about.
- While it takes up significant real estate on the fridge, it is nice and neat and does not look cluttered
- I can take constant inventory of my spices & blends
- While cooking, it’s RIGHT there!
Next on my to do (in the kitchen) is to create a hanging organizer for my measuring spoons and cups. I’ve seen some things on pinterest that peaked my interest, we’ll see if I’m up for the challenge.
In closet progress news…. I ordered wall paper! I’M SO EXCITED! I ordered two actually because I wasn’t sure which one I would actually go with. My gut says to use to blue, and keep the other one for the kitchen backsplash as it’s more neutral… but I’m not sure. We’ll see how hard it is to hang.
